In Season 3, Chummy struggles to adjust to life as a housewife and mother, Trixie's feathers are ruffled when Jenny is promoted, and a routine check-up leads to heartache for Shelagh.
It’s the final episode in the series and a nervous BBC has decided to keep it well hidden from TV critics, a draconian move that usually suggests Something Big Is Going to Happen. Who knows, maybe everyone is transported through a wormhole in space, or perhaps the nuns of Nonnatus House reveal that they wear full West Ham United strips beneath their dour work clothes. Or maybe someone dies.
We know, however, that Chummy’s mummy problems get worse. Last week we saw her going through paroxysms of pained humiliation as she tried to play a dutiful daughter to the horrible, emotionally frozen Lady Browne (Cheryl Campbell). Tonight, Lady B continues to plough her lonely furrow, much to Chummy’s consternation. And sweet Jenny, who’s had so much heartache in this series, what with the ladder-fall death of her dull boyfriend, meets another nice young man.
