Episode 3: Brighton Rock

Summary

Movie critic Ian Nathan examines the qualities that made this 1948 ganger film noir starring Richard Attenborough an enduring British classic.

Review

Calum Baker

It’s sun, sea and sadistic killers for critic Ian Nathan this week, as he examines gangster classic Brighton Rock. The film was controversial for its violence and bleak undercurrents, but Nathan and his fellow contributors make a case for it as one of British cinema’s cornerstones. Key personnel are explored in detail: star Richard Attenborough, who had previously played the film’s “young Scarface”, Pinkie Brown, on stage; socially minded producer/directors the Boulting brothers; and, of course, co-screenwriter Graham Greene, who insisted on retaining the darkness and religious anguish of his novel. Helpfully, Brighton Rock can be streamed on ITVX Premium and StudioCanal Presents.
