Episode 27: Jersey 1

Summary

Matt Baker and Charlotte Smith pay the first of two visits to Jersey, where they find out about the agile frog that is capable of leaping up to two metres but is on the brink of extinction on the island. Matt mucks in on an organic farm producing exotic fruit and vegetables for the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, while Charlotte explores how the brutal landmarks of German occupation are being repurposed to boost the local economy. Meanwhile, Adam Henson is in search of a new sheepdog pup to take over from his faithful companion Peg, who is nearing retirement, and Tom Heap investigates the potential impact on rural communities of plans to double nuclear capacity within 30 years

Review

Matt Baker’s have-a-go eagerness is on show again as he heads to Jersey to muck in on an organic farm producing exotic fruit and veg. He’s so chipper in these situations that the cynical side to me can’t help but think that as soon as the director yells “cut”, Matt downs tools immediately and storms back in silence to his huge trailer. But of course he doesn’t. He’s a borderline national treasure, for heaven’s sake.

Over on the farm, meanwhile, we have Adam Henson going in search of a new sheepdog pup to take over from his faithful companion Peg, who’s nearing retirement. Adam said recently that he can’t imagine not having Peg by his side, so emotions will no doubt run high.
