Summary
"Cadfael" is an historical drama starring Derek Jacobi in the title role as a monk who uses his experience as a talented herbalist to solve mysteries in the old Norman England town of Shrewsbury. The series was based on The Cadfael Chronicles, a series of books written by Edith Pargeter under the name Ellis Peters. Brother Cadfael entered the cloister in his forties after spending time as both a soldier and a sailor. While he investigates crimes, he often finds himself at odds with contemporaries who do not have the benefit of his worldly knowledge. It premiered on ITV in 1994 and ran for four series (13 episodes in total). Jacobi was supported by a cast that included Michael Culver, Julian Firth, Peter Copley, Terrence Hardiman and Mark Charnock. Repeat showings regularly appear on ITV3.
