Episode 1: Season 1, Episode 1

Summary

Former British Army captain Ed Stafford invites dads and their children into his wilderness adventure school, helping struggling modern families by stripping them of all the distractions of the 21st century and putting them through some of the toughest outdoor experiences. Ed begins by challenging the dads to navigate their way through the jungle to find their children, their journey includes a leap of faith from a 25ft cliff into deep water. One dad's overconfidence comes back to bite him while another realises just how much he is capable of if it means being reunited with his son. The teams then explore the depths of an ancient sinkhole, thought by Mayans to be the entrance to the underworld, with the fastest way to the bottom being a 160ft abseil

Is fatherhood in crisis? Explorer and ex-army captain Ed Stafford thinks so. He believes modern life gets in the way of good parenting. According to him, dads today are soft, risk-averse and fail to provide positive male role models. Stafford’s solution in this six-part series is to set up an extreme survival school to put struggling fathers through tough outdoor challenges.

Deep in the Belize rainforest, he’s joined by six ordinary fathers and their offspring. “It’s not Manchester,” notes one girl. They sleep rough, catch their own food, cook over fires, dig toilets and dodge creepy-crawlies in a bid to build resilience. First up, the dads must navigate through dense jungle to reach their kids and together abseil into an ancient sinkhole. You don’t get that at Center Parcs. Can teamwork bring them closer? Will the wilderness make them better fathers?
