Episode 5: 24 Hours in A&E

Summary

Doctors are concerned that a 95-year-old woman may have suffered life-changing injuries to her hip and internal bleeding after falling down a flight of stairs, while the patient's daughter reflects on her mother's optimistic attitude to life's challenges. Elsewhere, a man knocked off his bike at 40mph may have suffered brain damage. His brother remembers a difficult time that brought them closer together

Review

You’d think that for the patients and families we get to know in each 24 Hours episode, their time in hospital would be one of their most difficult life experiences. But as seasoned viewers of this Channel 4 perennial will know, that’s very rarely the case.

Tonight the focus is on two patients in particular: 95-year-old Sylvia, who’s fallen down a flight of stairs, and Mark, a 39-year-old who was hit by a car while riding his bike, and may be suffering from a brain injury. Sylvia’s daughter Liz and Mark’s brother Terry help to paint a broader picture of their loved ones, and the obstacles they’ve already overcome.
