Episode 6: 24 Hours in A&E

Summary

A nine-year-old boy falls over and lands on his head, and is left unable to move his limbs. As he waits for the results, the boy's father shares his feelings on the challenges of parenthood. Elsewhere, an 80-year-old woman is brought in with a dangerously swollen tongue and a nine-year-old girl is treated after falling off a swing, leaving consultant Rahail considering how the balance of care between parents and children shifts over time

Review

The cyclical relationship between parent and child is the theme that loosely binds tonight’s three patients. There’s nine-year-old Cian, who fell and hit his head while playing football at school, and is causing real concern at St George’s – he’s unable to move his limbs. We also get to know 80-year-old Annette, brought in with a seriously swollen tongue, and young Sophia, nine, who’s fallen off a swing.

As all three are treated and we learn more about their families, consultant Rahail considers the way in which the parent-child relationship alters through the years, and what it’s like when the caregiver swaps places with the dependent.
