Tomorrow morning, the solemn Remembrance Sunday service will take place in central London, with the King and other dignitaries laying wreaths at the Cenotaph. (You can watch live on BBC One at 10.15am or catch highlights later in the day at 7.10pm on BBC Two.) But first, we have another traditional part of remembrance season, the reliably moving concert held by the Royal British Legion at the Albert Hall.

It’s an event that is always assembled with skill and sensitivity, blending words, music and ceremonial to stirring effect. The climax arrives with a two-minute silence as a shower of poppy petals falls from the roof each marking a life lost. But the focus isn’t only on the fallen; it is on all the armed forces, veterans, and their families.

This year the theme is “service in a changing world”, reflecting the novel challenges facing the military on an unstable global stage. As always, the evening will feature top military bands (The Band of the Royal Air Force Regiment and two bands of HM Royal Marines), but also live contributions from Alfie Boe, Mica Paris, Rita Wilson and Tom Odell.
