Episode 4: The Lions of Causton

Summary

Businessman and owner of the Causton Lions rugby team Mark Adler is mysteriously found dead in the club's cryotherapy chamber, which is normally used by the players for physiotherapy. Barnaby and Winter are called in to investigate and their list of suspects soon includes Adler's wife Samantha, former coach Guy Bevan, troubled star player Danny Wickham and physio Neville Gallagher. Neil Dudgeon stars, with Tamzin Outhwaite, Don Gilet and Michael Maloney.

Review

ITV has had this episode on its shelf for over 12 months, in which time one of its guest stars Tamzin Outhwaite has rejoined EastEnders and then announced that she’s leaving again. Now, I know Midsomer Murders isn’t exactly Line of Duty, but it deserves better than being the show that’s left to gather dust before getting called upon in an emergency to plug gaps in the schedule.

After all, its methods of countryside carnage remain as vivid as ever. Tonight, for instance, you can take your pick from getting frozen in a cryotherapy chamber or drowning in a confectioner’s kitchen (I’d personally pick death by chocolate). And while the plot twists are a little by-numbers, the retinue of suspects give it their all, particularly Richard Rankin as a troubled rugby star and Don Gilet as his even-more-troubled coach.
