The possibility of Michael Gove as prime minister with Nicola Sturgeon as his deputy is frankly terrifying – they occupy political poles so far apart that only a code-red national emergency would bring them together. The one time they did have to collaborate was in the depths of the Covid pandemic, but for this series the COBR meetings they attend are make-believe, a high-tension reality stunt simulating how a national security crisis might unfold.
Imagine Russia’s campaign of hybrid warfare escalates. RAF pilots are mysteriously assassinated. There’s a cyber-attack on the NHS. Then one of Putin’s spy ships sinks and he blames the Royal Navy. Gove, Sturgeon and an eclectic cast of ministers including Penny Mordaunt and Baroness Warsi meet to discuss how to respond, while the special relationship with America (Secretary of State: Anthony Scaramucci) wobbles.
