Summary

The actor is joined by JJ Chalmers and Raksha Dave to look at the royal family's holiday home in the Norfolk countryside, revealing what goes on behind the imposing iron gates. The building first came into royal hands in 1862 when Queen Victoria snapped up the original Sandringham Hall as a 21st birthday present for her son Prince Bertie, hoping the quiet country air would tame his wild side - but the prince had other ideas

Review

Jane Rackham

He’s so posh, you might assume that Nigel Havers was a regular visitor to Sandringham, but no. All he knew was that it was where the royals went for Christmas, so he revels in a peek behind the front doors and wandering around the 20,000-acre estate, discovering for instance that King Charles rents out some of his Norfolk properties on Airbnb and that Sandringham’s first royal owner, Prince Bertie, would hold three-day parties here. Meanwhile, JJ Chalmers and Raksha Dave find out what daily life was like upstairs and downstairs.

The first episode takes us back to the mid 1900s, when the house lacked flushing toilets or electric lights. Unfortunately, after an extensive rebuild, which included a bowling alley and a confectionery room, the place went up in flames.
