Episode 2: Ireland: Coast and Country

Summary

Vermouth-makers forage on the coast of Valentia Island, a helicopter operation hangs in the balance on Rathlin Island and a goat herder in Howth is on an important mission to save an Irish species from going extinct. A farmer in the other-worldly landscape of the Burren continues an ancient yearly tradition known as the Winterage

Review

Anna and Orla are Ireland’s only vermouth producers. They’re based on tiny Valentia Island, which is situated on the southwestern tip of County Kerry and means a lot to the pair, since it’s where they got married. The latest episode of this ruggedly beautiful series follows them as they forage for ingredients on a motorbike built for two.

We also meet Melissa and her herd of female Old Irish Goats. She’s at the forefront of a breeding mission to save the entire species from extinction, and her everyday life looks utterly idyllic: all the people featured in this series have escaped from the rat race on their own proactive yet leisurely terms. It’s a humble constellation of wandering stars.
