Episode 2: Gracellie Hotel, Shanklin

Summary

Alex Polizzi heads to the famous seaside town of Shanklin on the Isle of Wight to visit father and daughter team Philip and Kelly, who run Gracellie Hotel. After years of haphazard management compounded by Covid-19 and then a very personal tragedy for the family, the hotel has fallen into deep decline. To save the hotel, the team at Gracellie need to dig deep and rekindle their passion for the family business

Review

There are almost as many hotels and B&Bs on the Isle of Wight as there are pebbles on a beach, but being spoilt for choice isn’t why Shanklin’s Gracellie Hotel is losing money.

Run by a father and daughter, who are delightful and have battled on despite a recent personal tragedy, the 50-bedroom hotel has a bad reputation with the locals (or at least those who know about it) and has had terrible guest reviews, including one saying it makes Fawlty Towers look like the Hilton.

Alex Polizzi doesn’t mince her words, calling it dreary and joyless. “It looks over Small Hope beach,” she says. “Which is exactly what it’s got at the moment.” Ouch.
