Review

“It was a marriage of two stars which ended up as a supernova explosion,” is how Lord Snowdon’s biographer Anne de Courcy sums up his toxic relationship with Princess Margaret.

With their celebrity friends and racy lifestyle, they were considered a glamorous couple during the 1960s, but Snowdon constantly had affairs with both men (allegedly) and women. He would “flirt with a letterbox,” de Courcy says, and could be cruel, while Margaret was also difficult and had affairs, too.

Much of their story is familiar but it’s still fascinating and, of course, paved the way for subsequent royal divorces.
