Review

Kirsty Wark has brought together six well-known women of different ages, experiences and backgrounds to spend a week exploring issues concerning women today, including cosmetic surgery and safety on the streets (this was filmed earlier this year when Sarah Everard was kidnapped — and subsequently murdered — walking home in London).

As they get to know each other better, they open up about their own experiences: Sinitta becomes tearful recalling a coercive relationship, Shirley Ballas struggles to accept a young woman monetising her sexuality and Chidera Eggerue re-evaluates her views after hearing the legal arguments regarding sexual consent. But it’s an honest discussion about trans women that creates the most confusion and anger.

We’ve come a long way since the early days of women’s lib but clearly there’s a lot further to go. This stimulating, thought-provoking and empathetic film might help.
