Episode 2: Beth's Flu

Summary

Beth is ill and has taken to her bed, so Ian and Gordon pop over to give Eric a hand, while Christine turns up with homemade soup. The interruptions continue as Cathy and Colin arrive, suggesting all Bshe needs is someone with a bit of personality to go and see her

Review

There are sly references here to the Fawlty Towers episode where Basil pretends Sybil is sick but her friends insist on seeing her. Except that Beth (Arabella Weir) really is ill — in bed with flu while Eric (Alex Norton) looks after her. That’s fine until neighbour Christine turns up to pontificate on the bug. (“Isabelle up the high flats was in her bed for a week. She says her memory foam will never bounce back”.)

Manipulative, martyrish Christine (Elaine C Smith) is a great comedy creation. With friends like her, who needs enemies? And what a turn of phrase: at one point she recalls a bad cold where she had to blow her nose so much that she “was like Rumpole of the f*****g Bailey.”
