Review

As country music’s boundaries broadened, Nashville die-hards feared it was losing its identity.

It wasn’t just the crossover to easy-listening “countrypolitan” music but the arrival of stars such as Waylon “Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way?” Jennings, who didn’t look like a country singer, and the folksy Emmylou Harris, who didn’t sound like one. Meanwhile, Hank Williams Jr, Rosanne Cash and others stepped out of their famous fathers’ shadow, bluegrass quietly continued to underscore many country songs and Austin, Texas, became “outlaw music” HQ.

Ken Burns’s engrossing doc demonstrate how country music managed to remain true to its roots while exploring new sounds and finding new audiences.
