Inside Art: Masterpieces from Buckingham Palace

Summary

A look at the breathtaking royal collection of art found in the state rooms at Buckingham Palace, with many pieces acquired and commissioned by George IV

Review

If you like an Old Master, don’t let this early-evening one-off on Sky Arts pass you by, it’s an absolute treat. Kate Bryan gets a private tour of the current show at the Queen’s Gallery (reopening to the public next month) and bubbles with glee at so many “stone cold classics” in one place.

The works are normally hung two-deep in a state room, which seems absurd when there are Rembrandts, Vermeers (well, one – The Music Lesson), Titians, Canalettos, and so on. Bryan talks to the curators and does a great job conveying the drama of works like Pallas Athene by Parmigianino but also the fine detail of a Rembrandt forehead or a glowing string of pearls.
