Drama series set in the 1950s, in the Cambridgeshire village named Grantchester.
Drama series set in the 1950s, in the Cambridgeshire village named Grantchester.
You’ll often find Grantchester misfiled as a honey-hued hour of nostalgia, but it can sometimes be bruising, both physically and emotionally. Just witness the opening minutes of this episode, which find Will getting involved in a punch-up with a thief (played by one-time Outnumbered teenager Tyger Drew-Honey) who has just staged an audacious robbery from a bank security van. And then there’s curate Leonard, who’s looking like very much like a cornered animal as he’s ambushed in court by the no-holds-barred barrister at his gross indecency trial.
Both stories are gritty in their own way, but don’t initially appear to have much of a connection. Yet by the end of his shift, Geordie has found that, when viewed together, the cases have something significant to say about the perversities of policework and the limitations of the justice system.
