Episode 5: Grantchester

Summary

As the day of Leonard's trial dawns, Will and Geordie are called upon to investigate an audacious robbery from a bank security van in Cambridge, which has had tragic repercussions for an innocent bystander. Questioning the apprehended suspect Malcy Smith and the bank security guard Wilson Black, Will and Geordie have a hunch that something about their account of events doesn't quite add up. Drama set in the 1950s, starring Robson Green

Review

You’ll often find Grantchester misfiled as a honey-hued hour of nostalgia, but it can sometimes be bruising, both physically and emotionally. Just witness the opening minutes of this episode, which find Will getting involved in a punch-up with a thief (played by one-time Outnumbered teenager Tyger Drew-Honey) who has just staged an audacious robbery from a bank security van. And then there’s curate Leonard, who’s looking like very much like a cornered animal as he’s ambushed in court by the no-holds-barred barrister at his gross indecency trial.

Both stories are gritty in their own way, but don’t initially appear to have much of a connection. Yet by the end of his shift, Geordie has found that, when viewed together, the cases have something significant to say about the perversities of policework and the limitations of the justice system.
