Episode 4: Grantchester

Summary

An otherwise quiet nightshift is disrupted when a group of young American airmen are arrested for trespassing at the local quarry and brought to the station. When one of the airmen collapses and dies, Geordie and Will must try and work out how he could have been murdered in plain sight, in police custody. Drama set in the 1950s, starring Robson Green

Review

The bulk of the budget for this series of Grantchester must have been blown on that re-creation of a 1950s holiday camp a few weeks ago, as what we get now is an obvious cost-saving episode filmed, for the most part, on just two sets: the vicarage living room and the police station. What it doesn’t stint on though is the drama, with the arrival of a group of American airmen who’ve been arrested for trespassing enlivening what was looking to be a dull nightshift.

Now, you don’t have to be an inspector of Geordie’s calibre to have worked out that one of these military guys is destined to be murdered. But what’s surprising is that they happen to drop dead in plain sight while in custody. Also interesting is the sudden bust-up between Geordie and Will, the catalyst for which is an admission by the village vicar that he deliberately swerved national service in his youth. It’s a confession that leads to him being branded “a disgrace” by the affronted DI Keating.
