Episode 8: Grantchester

Summary

When a successful music producer is murdered, Geordie finds himself implicated in the investigation. Forced to consider whether his army buddy Johnny could be the killer, Geordie has to finally face up to some traumatic events from his own past. Meanwhile, Will is on thin ice with the Bishop, who wants to discuss his future in Grantchester. Could both of their jobs be on the line - and can he save himself as well as his best friend?

Review

Tristan Gemmill isn’t having a good of run of it of late: in his last big TV role, as Bistro chef Robert Preston on Coronation Street, he was shot dead and now here, playing domineering music producer Gene Daltrey, he suffers the exact same fate before the first commercial break.

Prior to his death, Gene’s wife Rita, a successful singer, had been trying to escape his clutches and was being aided by none other than Geordie’s old Army buddy Johnny Richards – his appearance on the scene vindicating any viewer who’d been sensing that a performer of Shaun Dooley’s calibre had to have been booked to do more than act drunk each week. Those with particularly suspicious natures might even now start suspecting Johnny of being capable of murder…

This being the final episode, we also discover the fate of incarcerated curate Leonard, whose dire current situation has left audiences feeling understandably anguished. But will he be left in his prison cell until the next series?
