Episode 4: Fosse Way

Summary

Dan Jones travels along the Fosse Way, a route that stretches for 230 miles through the heart of England from Exeter to Lincoln

Review

Dan Jones’s informative trip around Roman Britain travels Fosse Way, which ran diagonally from Exeter to Lincoln marking the limits (as one stage ) of Roman territory, connecting garrison towns.

Jones, though, is more interested in the fact that this was, he suggests, ‘the most lively and hedonistic of Britain’s Roman Roads.’ Can a road be hedonistic? Making his point, Jones conducts an interview about Roman baths with a female historian while they lie on massage beds.

It’s hilarious – as is the use of paintings depicting a saucy Victorian fantasy of Roman baths. Elsewhere, glass-making is compared to the iPhone and Jones tastes fermented fish guts.
