The Vikings and Their Quest for Silver

Summary

On the Swedish island of Gotland, archaeologists and metal detectorists have found some 200,000 silver coins - at least twice as many as have been discovered in the whole of Sweden. Rajan Datar examines why the Gotlanders - and Vikings more generally - were so attracted to this metal. He also learns what the coins reveal about this huge Viking trading area and its society, as DNA analysis and microscopic laser sampling yield new, more detailed and sometimes surprising answers
