Laskarina Bouboulina, Female Admiral

Summary

The 1821 Greek war for independence from the Ottoman empire became an inspiration for people all over Europe who wanted to dismantle the old multi-ethnic empires, but it is less well known that a number of women played a key role in the uprising. Bridget Kendall and guests focus on perhaps the best known of the Greek women freedom fighters, Laskarina Bouboulina, a woman whose deeds as a generous financier of the uprising and as a brave sea captain have enthralled Greeks and their supporters for the last two centuries.
