Summary

A journey through one of the most spectacular bus routes in Britain, following the Northern Dalesman through the iconic landscape of the Yorkshire Dales. Beginning in Richmond and filmed in real time, cameras capture the passing scenery and the occasional chatter of local passengers, climbing high into the heart of the Dales, before descending towards the striking 24-arch Ribblehead viaduct.

Review

Fancy a little trip across the Yorkshire Dales by bus? You don’t have to do or say anything, just gaze out of the window at the almost decadently lush scenery.

All Aboard! The Country Bus is lovely, a real-time journey (two hours) from the pretty Georgian market town of Richmond in North Yorkshire, across the Dales to Ingleton, with its mighty Ribblehead Victorian viaduct. This is BBC4’s patented slow TV at its finest and most leisurely.

There’s barely even any engine noise from the Northern Dalesman bus as its jolly driver greets passengers (“How do you do!”) who chat amiably among themselves. As we potter through the country, making occasional stops – Reeth, Gunnerside, Hawes – occasional fact-ettes pop up as little graphics, but they don’t intrude on the general loveliness and languor.

So why not sit back and enjoy Elysian England at its finest.
