Review

When Mel Smith died of a heart attack, aged just 60, there was an outpouring of real affection for a well-loved comedian, not just from fellow professionals, but from members of the public, too. We’d lost a genial presence, a man who some of us felt we grew up with on television, who was responsible for a big chunk of our comedy education with the anarchy of Not the Nine O’Clock News and the wit of Alas Smith and Jones.

It’s only fitting that tonight’s tribute is presented by Smith’s great friend and comedy partner, Griff Rhys Jones. The pair seeped into the national consciousness with those sharp head-to-head sketches and tonight’s tribute programme features some of the best bits from their series.
