Paul is served with a lawsuit by the father of a former patient, before having his first session with a boy whose parents are divorcing.
It’s the end of yet another difficult week for Paul (Gabriel Byrne), so he boards a train and meets his old mucker Gina (Dianne Wiest). She’s a therapist too, of course, so traditionally this is where we hear Paul say all the things he has to keep hidden when he’s working.
The client playing on his mind most is April, but when Paul opens for business in Brooklyn on Monday morning, first through the door is sad, waspish lawyer Mia (Hope Davis). What a fearsome creation she is: she’s exhausted by self-analysis, is desperate to interpret any feedback negatively and has a biological clock with smoke coming out of it. Break out the popcorn, Mia’s a keeper.
