This episode also explores Gloucester Services' close association with the local community

Review

John Aizlewood

The title suggests a rural idyll, but the Cotswold shop in question is actually at Gloucester Services on the M5. Unusually, it has a farm shop, or, as one delighted punter purrs, “a Fortnum & Mason on the motorway”. The prices are never revealed, but we meet chirpy shop buyer Jane Karlicek who’s introduced to the fizzy fermented drink perry (“I’m a perry virgin!” she trills).

Meanwhile, cheese counter head Alex Evans is prevailed upon to stock a challenging Gloucestershire cheese infused with wild garlic despite admitting “I’m not a flavoured cheese fan”. The story of a kitchen supervisor, a twice-jailed drug dealer who’s turned her life around, sprinkles grit into the sweetness.
