Episode 1: Jane Austen's Sanditon

Summary

Charlotte returns to Sanditon and makes an important decision. Meanwhile, Georgiana meets an intriguing artist and Esther Babington has an unwanted encounter with someone from her past. Drama, starring Rose Williams and Crystal Clarke

Review

The first series of Sanditon was a curious beast. Written by period drama supremo Andrew Davies as a loose, at times louche, adaptation of Jane Austen’s unfinished final novel, it wound up in determinedly un-Austen fashion, with downbeat endings and loose story threads all round, clearly pitching for a second series.

That was back in 2019. Now the second series finally arrives on ITV following a launch earlier this year on streaming service BritBox. We’re returning to the freshly built Regency resort of Sanditon, eight months on from that original visit; but young women are still cooing about eligible bachelors and young men will keep forgetting to put their shirts on. There’s also a dashing and intriguing artist in town and, hello, a company of redcoats arriving for the summer months.

Luckily, amid the saccharine mix, veteran star Anne Reid adds a welcome touch of vinegar as the sharp-tongued, cynical Lady Denham.
