Summary
Sara Pascoe presents the semi-final, which celebrates Japanese design and sewing. For the pattern challenge, Esme Young has collaborated with a Japanese designer to come up with a kimono-inspired dress, while the transformation task sees the sewers mending worn-out denim using Eastern techniques of embroidery and applique. The made-to-measure sees them fitting an outfit to their models which has elements of origami folds and pleats - and with the final just a week away, the stakes are higher than ever

It’s remarkable how cheery the contestants are when they are given bad news, although there are tears from everyone – even the judges – this week.
Tonight’s round finds the four semi-finalists turning Japanese, with challenges including a kimono-inspired dress, transforming jeans using the traditional embroidery techniques of boro and sashiko, and made-to-measure origami dresses. They’re tricky tasks and the room reverberates to empowering mutters of “I can do this”.
