Episode 5: Doctor Foster

Summary

Gemma's investigation into her husband, Simon, concludes as she prepares to take action against him. After uncovering the secrets the man she married has been keeping from her, the senior GP must brace herself for the last time as she takes on a mission to reveal all of his betrayals. She carefully devises a plan which will ensure her final act of revenge is as explosive as it can possibly be. Starring Suranne Jones, Bertie Carvel and Thusitha Jayasundera

Review

“I’m a wolf tonight!” roars small-town GP Gemma Foster as she commands attention at what turns out to be the most catastrophic and excruciating dinner party ever.

Humiliated Gemma, burning with righteous fury, is an incendiary spectre at the feast, unleashing a torrent of truth around the table. Naturally, no one makes it to the pudding course.

It’s a vicious and absorbing set piece that feels theatrical, probably because scriptwriter Mike Bartlett is primarily a playwright, and it’s the most gripping part of a final episode that, inevitably, feels like a let down. I’d certainly been expecting more and was left feeling I still really don’t know Gemma.

But that’s not the fault of Suranne Jones, who has been brilliant throughout as a wife wronged by a faithless husband (Bertie Carvel, again, excellent).
