Episode 3: The Ladder

Summary

Crozier demands that Franklin send out a sledge party to seek help, but he is reluctant to risk any more of his men. The resulting clash leads Franklin to condemn Crozier for his alcoholism, prompting his devastated old friend to take matters into his own hands, drafting a resignation letter and taking personal responsibility for finding help

Review

The first half of this episode focuses on officers with snow stuck to their muttonchop sideburns — above all Ciarán Hinds and Jared Harris — sniping at each other about naval strategy or the state of rotting provisions on board ship. But be on your guard, as the stage is merely being set for a grisly showdown. The crew of seafarers seems to be under the impression that the threat they’re facing is a bear, but I doubt it’ll turn out to be anything so prosaic.

Away from the monster action, there’s horror of a different nature as Hickey gets revenge on Gibson by leaving a nasty surprise in his bed. Those sheets are going to need a good boil wash is all I’m saying about the matter.
