Episode 1: Go for Broke

Summary

In the 19th century, two Royal Navy ships embark on a dangerous mission to find the Arctic's fabled Northwest Passage, battling the elements and the unknown. Thriller, starring Ciaran Hinds, Jared Harris, Tobias Menzies and Adam Nagaitis

Review

The BBC is currently doing a decent job of excavating cult dramas from recent years and introducing them to a wider audience. The latest is this supernatural chiller from 2018 (first shown on AMC) that puts top actors such as Jared Harris and Tobias Menzies on 19th century naval vessels and sends them off on an ill-fated Arctic expedition.

Executive-produced by Ridley Scott, it’s essentially Alien at Sea, with this opening double bill depicting the crew’s hubris giving way to fear as people start losing their lives. “This place wants us dead,” remarks an officer at one point, summing up the series in a sentence. Expect plenty of claustrophobic tension, some splatters of gore and the odd jump scare.
