Review

Jane Rackham

Andiamo to glorious Palermo in Sicily, a place that Michael Portillo says isn’t polished like Venice or Tuscany but is “edgy and makes me feel alive”. As we’ve seen before, he throws himself into every experience, even trying a cow’s spleen sandwich, one of the pleasures to be found at the souk-like food market.

Less challenging for him is a tour of the architectural sights, a cooking class with a duchess and an exhilarating drive to a spectacular view. This isn’t your average celebrity travelogue because Portillo revels in getting under the skin of a place and, although it isn’t his beloved Spain, understanding and embracing its history and culture.
