Episode 4: Deep Ocean: Giants of the Antarctic Deep: Giants of the Antarctic Deep

Summary

Documentary about the first scientific research undertaken in a submersible in the Antarctic. Three marine biologists use customised UHD cameras to capture ling the extraordinary forms of life that thrive in the Southern Ocean on film. Narrated by David Attenborough.

Review

Here be monsters. It’s long been known that the dark, cold waters of the oceans around the Antarctic are home to oversized versions of creatures found elsewhere – colossal squid weighing half a ton, jellyfish with arms ten metres long, starfish the size of a 12in pizza. Why this should be isn’t fully understood, but now a team of marine biologists are taking submersibles down to 1000m below the surface of the Antarctic to learn more about its supersized denizens, armed with very high-spec cameras. Their first views of the ocean floor are astonishing – like a garden designed by Hieronymus Bosch. Followed at 9.50pm by a weird and wonderful 2018 documentary about underwater bioluminescence.
