Episode 5: Rob & Romesh vs Team GB: Part 1
Summary
Review
“We’re fed up of being useless at everything,” says Rob Beckett at the start of another run of hilarious have-a-go heroics. So this time, he and fellow stand-up and friend Romesh Ranganathan try to find an Olympic event they might take to, aided by the nation’s finest athletes.
Whittling down the 339 events to just eight – using criteria such as “Shooting? You don’t have to move for that. I think that’s good for us” – they then take the plunge with canoe slalom at Lee Valley in Hertfordshire. Both scream constantly during the ice-cold swim test, and you sense it’s not just for the cameras.
This is a joy for anyone who hated PE at school, and the “every loser wins” message is heartening. Their female coaches in each “discipline” are gracious, tolerant and hugely impressive. Knowing that it’s played for laughs doesn’t make it any less funny – R&R give everything a go… with medal-winning banter.

Review
The recent sight of Rob Beckett watching England at Wembley proves he likes his sport. But as many find, “liking” and “being good at” can be worlds apart. And his quest with Romesh Ranganathan to find an Olympic sport they’re comfortable with sees the pair going through the disciplines like a dose of salts.
Their donning of leotards has gymnast Max Whitlock in fits of laughter, while their pommel-horse training on a giant mushroom and a plastic bucket ends with Romesh feeling “like the world’s saddest gnome”. Surely throwing things, with heptathlete Denise Lewis as their trainer, can’t be worse?
It’s hilarious without even trying – and, in the end, surprisingly uplifting.
