Seven decades. One extraordinary experiment. The pioneering documentary returns to meet the people we first saw at seven as they reflect on life at 70.

Episode 1: 70 Up
Summary
Oscar-winning film-maker Asif Kapadia takes over from the original director Michael Apted for the first of a two-part final instalment of the documentary first broadcast in 1964 that revisits subjects every seven years. Having first featured on the programme as seven-year-olds, they reflect on their lives having now reached the age of 70, while the programme asks what the series has revealed about British society
Review
David Brown
There’s been a sense of more time being behind than ahead in the last couple of Up documentaries, but this final two-part film has an even greater awareness of mortality. With many of the participants now retired, their lives naturally seem to be under review, with regrets pricking the eyes as old mistakes are acknowledged. And then, of course, there are the losses, including the death of long-standing director Michael Apted, whose remarkable work is fittingly ended here by Asif Kapadia.
Part of Kapadia’s mission in this sign-off is to ask whether the series’ central maxim – that you can discern the adult a child will become by the age of seven – still holds true as they all turn 70. What’s touching is how often we can still recognise the innocent faces from that early black-and-white footage in the people we encounter today, even when life has delivered its disappointments.
What a privilege it’s been to witness an experiment that has become an extraordinary chronicle of postwar social history and the passing of the years.
