Review

After the huge and well-deserved success of the 2019 miniseries, you might have thought we’d know pretty much all about the 1986 nuclear disaster at Chernobyl in the then Soviet Union. But this new documentary from James Jones gets right to the heart of the story, using a newly discovered hoard of footage filmed – at great risk – in the immediate aftermath of the disaster.

There are also powerful interviews with eyewitnesses, who reveal how Chernobyl changed their lives for ever, while the film itself shows how the state’s response to the crisis – effectively trying to cover up its true extent – helped to hasten the end of the Soviet Union itself.
