Episode 2: Richard Osman

Summary

Richard Osman delves into his Brighton roots and is astonished to discover how his four-times great grandfather turned amateur sleuth and ended up entangled in one of the city's most notorious murder trials. The quiz show presenter, TV producer and crime writer also investigates his grandfather's army career and learns why it gave him a profound belief in the power of education, which he passed on to his grandson

Review

House of Games’s Richard Osman has always been fascinated by crime – perhaps because his much-loved maternal grandfather Fred was a policeman – and has had phenomenal success with his murder-mystery novels about a group of elderly amateur sleuths investigating murders from a retirement home in Sussex. So he’s both astonished and thrilled to learn about a “real-life murder case with my four-times great grandfather at the heart of it” in Brighton. After digging a bit more, he’s tempted to write about a detective duo who go around solving crimes in 1830s Brighton. Now there’s an idea.

As with so many of these family tree documentaries, stories of poverty and hardship are never far away. For every blue-blooded link, there are dozens of tales about the workhouse or worse. However, returning to Fred’s life story, Osman is heartened to find that despite Fred’s humble beginnings and troubles (as a teenager he got into trouble for nicking a bike – crime again!), his grandfather eventually became a regimental sergeant major before joining the Sussex constabulary as an inspector.
