Episode 5: Ralf Little

Summary

Ralf Little heads to the Orkney Islands off the north coast of Scotland to investigate his grandfather Arthur's experience during the Second World War. He is astonished to discover that Arthur was caught up in one of the most important battles of the war. On another branch of the family tree, Ralf is thrilled to confirm a family rumour that he is linked to a Welsh international footballer - his great grandfather. On returning to his home town of Manchester, the actor is delighted to learn that his four-times great grandfather played a key role in the industrial development of the city

Review

There are two things about his family tree that actor Ralf Little vaguely recollects being mentioned: a “whiff of poshness” and a Welsh footballer. Unlike Danny Dyer in a previous programme he’s not related to royalty, but he does discover that his four-times great grandfather was both influential and well-connected.

Little splits his time between Guadeloupe (filming Death in Paradise) and America, but his roots are in Manchester so that’s his starting point. He’s very vocal about what he finds. “I never knew there was so much to talk about,” he exclaims after hearing of his late grandfather’s war exploits. But being a keen player himself, it’s reading a newspaper report about that footballing ancestor that thrills him most. “Get in there! That’s made my day!” he whoops.
