Episode 2: Love at First Sight

Summary

Birdy and Nathan have been dating for a month now and have very quickly settled into a relationship, leaving Maggie feeling insecure, worried that her friend is slipping away. Meanwhile, the flatmates discuss career motivations. While Birdy has her sights set on her dream job at John Lewis, Amara has abandoned her hopes of being a professional dancer in favour of a stable corporate career in property. Nell teaches in a secondary school and is the only one of the group who already has a proper career, while Maggie is keen to leave her mark on the world by becoming special and famous

Review

Maggie (Emma Appleton) is, in many ways, the flip side of Birdy (Bel Powley). She’s currently crashing through her 20s and acting on impulse, whereas her best mate is cautious and an assiduous planner. But they have a history that dates back to an adolescence spent choreographing dance routines to Kylie Minogue songs in suburban living rooms. So, there’s a link and a sense of loyalty that’s important to them both.

Only now, we get the definite sense that Maggie is inwardly furious with Birdy for being in a stable relationship and fears being left behind. On the surface, it remains all smiles, but as episode two of this big-hearted paean to female friendship progresses, we see melancholy start to gnaw at Maggie as we flash back to the joyful highs and sometimes painful lows of her teenage years.
