Episode 1: Destiny

Summary

Romantic comedy following childhood best friends Maggie and Birdy as they move into their first London house share with a couple of pals from university. Maggie becomes besotted with a sexy street musician - but when their paths cross again, things take an unexpected turn

Review

The scheduling here feels very apt: as the soothing but rather earnest Conversations with Friends ends on BBC3, we now get what feels like its irreverent cousin debuting on BBC1.

Yes, it covers similar territory, in that we’re destined to witness the friendship between 20-somethings being affected by relationship issues. But its characters are immediately more likeable and the pacing noticeably zippier. No surprise really, as the Dolly Alderton memoir on which it’s based is a grabby and candidly funny read.

That narrative, told in the first person in the pages of the book, is hung here on hedonistic Maggie (Emma Appleton, currently also featuring in Pistol on Disney+) and the life she shares in 2012 with her London housemates, most notably the less-worldly Birdy (Bel Powley, The Morning Show). This is a post-university, pre-responsibilities landscape of Friday night excess, Saturday morning regret and low-balance bank accounts. But what Birdy is really craving is convention, something which a currently carefree Maggie is railing against. Bonds, we sense, will be tested.
