Review

Many American fans were disappointed by this season finale – and remember this is an anthology show with a new cast each year, so the end of the season means the end of Rust and Marty’s story. It was too procedural, too conventional, they said. Not in keeping with what’s gone before. But it is. The point is that the central characters have changed.

In the previous episode we saw that the detectives’ unhealable wounds and destructive impulses had left them with nothing but the case that, for 17 years, has run alongside the mother of all midlife crises. Now they’ve hit bottom they can try to solve it, edging towards a kind of redemption that sees the show dabble successfully in slightly brighter, more mystical philosophising. It makes sense.

The investigation itself means True Detective is back in thriller mode, as Marty and Rust track down Louisiana’s answer to Leatherface. Ace director Cary Fukunaga sets himself and the show’s production designers one final test: to surpass every creepy serial-killer lair ever put on celluloid. They give it a damned good go.
