Episode 2: Seeing Things

Summary

The hunt continues for the murderer of Dora Lange, but the detectives are feeling the pressure from above as the powers-that-be put the squeeze on for results. Cohle gets a lead that takes him and Hart to a trailer-park brothel, where they get their hands on Lange's diary and an evangelical advertisement for a backwater church she was attending prior to her disappearance. Drama, starring Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson

Review

Another reptilian hour of dark drama, lifting the lid on its characters slowly as if terrified of what’s there. Woody Harrelson is still menacingly good as Marty Hart, the elder and more bloated of the cop pair investigating a ritualistic murder. Tonight, in scenes full of textbook HBO smut, we learn how sex brings out his lying, evasive nature.

But this is Matthew McConaughey’s show. Rust Cohle already looks like a great TV creation: a man of violence who both grieves for and envies his deceased child, and who potentially uses his talent for second-guessing crazed killers as light psychological relief.

Tonight there’s the first clear reference to The King in Yellow, an 1895 anthology of horror stories centring on a play that drives all who read it mad, since it reveals some unbearable truth about humanity… That’s the sort of thing Marty and Rust have waiting for them. Next week, the storm starts to break.
