Episode 3: Revenge

Summary

Dan Jones continues his history of the Plantagenet dynasty with a look at Edward II, who ruled England between 1307 and 1327. In a story of murder, intrigue, lust, betrayal and revenge, the historian explores whether there is any truth behind the rumours that Edward II was gay, investigates what turned his queen into a bloodthirsty matriarch now known as the `She-Wolf", and reveals how the king's obsessions with his noblemen - especially Piers Gaveston - blurred his judgement throughout his reign

Review

The reconstructions reach new heights of absurdity as Edward II’s favourite, Piers Gaveston, appears on the scene, looking like a long-haired Spanish rock star.

But presenter Dan Jones knows how to spin a good story, and Edward’s reign is a good story. On whether the king and Gaveston were in fact lovers, Jones is clear: it didn’t matter: “To the people of the time, Edward could have been bedding his priest, his page boy and his horse, so long as he was governing the kingdom properly.”

But he wasn’t, he was hopeless as a ruler, and a tide of civil war and vengeance folowed, in which “She-wolf” Queen Isabella proves the star of the show.
