Summary
"Doc Martin" is a comedy drama following the adventures of Dr Martin Ellingham (Martin Clunes), an eminent surgeon forced to retrain as a GP after developing a phobia to blood. He filled a vacancy in Portwenn, a fictional Cornish village where he previously spent happy childhood holidays. Much of the humour is derived from Martin's interactions with the villagers as he lacks vital social skills and any semblance of a bedside manner, which often leads to misunderstandings. One bright light in his life is school teacher Louisa Glasson (Caroline Catz). Other characters include father-and-son plumbers Bert (Ian McNeice) and Al Large (Joe Absolom) and hypochondriac chemist Sally Tishell (Selina Cadell). It is one of ITV's most popular programmes. It premiered in 2004.
