Will Smith out of Independence Day sequels

Director Roland Emmerich says star is “too expensive”

Will Smith will not appear in any follow-ups to the 1996 blockbuster Independence Day, because he would be too expensive – according to director Roland Emmerich.

Emmerich, who helmed the original movie and will also direct a new sequel, to be released in 2015, told the New York Daily News: “Will Smith cannot come back because he’s too expensive, but he’d also be too much of a marquee name. We have maybe half the people that you know from the first film, and the other half people who are new.”

Smith was not yet a huge Hollywood megastar when he played the lead in the alien invasion film, which went on to take $817m at the box office and is currently the 38th highest-grossing movie of all time.
