Kym Marsh first landed in the public eye in 2001 when she participated in the talent show Popstars. Merseyside native Marsh survived eliminations to become a member of the resulting musical group, Hear’Say.
However, she left the group less than a year later due to personality clashes. After this, Marsh attempted a solo career, but her record label dropped her soon after the release of her first album.
Marsh, who was born in 1976, has said that she loved acting before forgetting it in favour of singing. She rediscovered this love after a 2004 stint on the West End revival of Saturday Night Fever.
But Marsh did not give up on her hopes of a singing career: in 2006, she entered a competition to be the UK entry for the Eurovision Song Contest. She came in fourth.
Nonetheless, that same year would prove a turning point for her career. She landed a four-episode stint on Coronation Street as Michelle Connor – and after proving a hit with viewers, has remained a permanent resident in Weatherfield for more than a decade.
Her other television credits include bit parts on medical dramas Doctors (2005) and Holby City (2006).
Marsh has three children. Her 18-year-old daughter, Emilie Cunliffe, auditioned for The Voice UK, but was not selected by any of the mentors.
Michelle Connor initially arrived in Weatherfield in 2006 to audition for Vernon Tomlin’s band. Soon after, she became barmaid at the town’s favourite pub, The Rovers Return.
Michelle has had to deal with more than her fair share of bereavement due to motor accidents: her boyfriend Dean was killed in a crash caused by her brother Paul, who himself died from another car accident in 2007. Only a year later, her other brother Liam was killed in a deliberate hit-and-run.
It was later revealed that Ryan, her son by Dean, had been swapped at birth.
After a failed engagement to Ciaran McCarthy (played by Bozyone’s Keith Duffy), Michelle married her long-time love Steve McDonald in 2015.
Most recently, her life has been disrupted by the arrival of her teenage sweetheart, Will, while her husband is away in Spain.
