The first episode of season 23 will see DCI John Barnaby and DS Jamie Winter tasked with investigating the murder of a doomsday prepper, who is found dead in his own bunker.

And in Barnaby's personal life, he gets a shock when his wife Sarah informs him that his mother-in-law is coming to stay, which RadioTimes.com had an exclusive look at! The teaser clip shows Barnaby really put his foot in it as things turn awkward with the impending visitor.

What is The Blacktrees Prophecy about?

The official synopsis is as follows: "The village of Blacktrees-on-Marsh not only sits in the very heart of Midsomer, but extraordinarily enough, it was once also listed on secret Cold War documents that detailed the places Russia would target in England in the event of nuclear war.

"While the listing is more than likely a myth or a joke that someone cracked in The Huntsman's Horn, there are still some who are convinced of its truth… even plagued by it."

One such person is Warren Kaine, "an obsessive, compulsive fearmonger whose apocalyptic beliefs have grown to dominate every second of his existence" – including the plunging of his life savings into a bombproof underground bunker.

"One morning Warren receives the call he was been waiting for: nuclear missiles have launched. Vindicated, he races to the bunker and radios for the other preppers to meet him there."

But it later emerges that it was a hoax when Warren's wife finds his body.
