The revelations about Max Branning just keep on coming, with Charlie Cotton telling Jack Branning in tonight’s EastEnders that his big brother was behind a secret plot to take stepson Matthew away from him.

Arriving unannounced in yesterday’s cliffhanger, guilt-ridden Charlie told Jack how mad Max paid him to take Matthew (Charlie and Jack’s late wife Ronnie’s son) away and never let him see the kid again, and had threatened him with violence if he didn’t tow the line.

Initially dismissing Charlie’s claims as a pack of lies, once Mr Cotton left – promising Jack he’d let him be a part of Matthew’s life from now on – Max admitted it was all true, and the gloves were off as the Branning brothers ripped into each other.

Max came clean about wanting to punish Jack for not coming to his aid when the Beale and Mitchell clans framed him for murdering Lucy Beale, but Jack didn’t exactly smooth things over when he disclosed that at the time he thought Max could’ve actually been capable of the crime.

Furious Jack threw Max out onto the street, calling him sick, twisted and disgusting for deliberately setting out to wreck so many lives – let’s not forget everyone’s still reeling over Max’s involvement in the Weyland scandal that made him a pariah on the Square.

Max pleaded forgiveness and begged his bruv to help him exact revenge on the ones who really deserve it and are to blame for motivating his murky manipulations – Phil Mitchell and Ian Beale, who masterminded the Lucy set-up to protect their own families.

But it was too late – Max was out on his ear, rejected by the last member of his family who had stuck by him through the trauma of the last few weeks. As he stared over at the Vic to see Phil and Ian together, he met the mens’ gaze and had a murderous look in his eyes…

With nothing to lose, Max’s thirst for vengeance is set to be at the heart of the Christmas drama in Walford, which we’re promised will be the most explosive festive season in a decade. Will Max commit murder for real?
